Myopia Management:
No Time Like the Present

WCO  Myopia Management Navigator Ambassador, Dr. Jagrut Lallu, is actively working towards operating more sustainably. In the past year, he has begun planting and growing fruits, vegetables, and trees on his property.

In his downtime, the New Zealand native enjoys spending time at the beach, swimming, or playing cricket. But when he’s not taking advantage of the beautiful weather and sights that New Zealand has to offer, he’s advocating for myopia management.

Dr. Lallu opened New Zealand’s first myopia management clinic in 2009. As an optometrist, he realizes that he has the power to make significant, lifelong differences in his patients’ lives in as little as 30 minutes. Each moment spent with his patients is an opportunity to educate them on the importance of myopia management.

“There is no time like the present to adopt myopia management in your practice,” says Dr. Lallu. “The science and data are all there. We know what we need to do, so it’s time to do our part and put it into action.”

Dr. Lallu believes that resources like the WCO Myopia Management Navigator are imperative to bringing myopia management into mainstream optometry. For optometrists who may be unsure where or how to begin, Lallu states that the Navigator is not only a simple, effective, and helpful resource to leverage, but it also is a confidence builder.

The Navigator is divided into three sections: mitigation, measurement, and management. The measurement section provides an overview of what measurements to include during a child’s eye exam to determine whether the child has myopia or is at risk of developing it—including the standard four assessments and three additional checks for myopia.
